HoosOnline upgrade begins in late June
Next month HoosOnline will begin a six-month upgrade that increases security and privacy and offers new services to members of the University of Virginia community.
The first phase of the upgrade, scheduled to debut June 29, includes an updated visual design, more news, increased security, a simplified registration process, and numerous technical changes that operate behind the scenes. Subsequent phases will include new community tools, online event registration and increased customization.
The late-June visual update will include an alumni feature story and University news on the log-in page. After logging in, visitors will continue to have access to the directory, lifetime email forwarding and career networking assistance (UCAN). They also will find more customized content based on their interests and relationship to U.Va.
To increase privacy for alumni, the new HoosOnline directory listings will only display the contact information of alumni who have given permission for their profiles to be viewable to others in the HoosOnline community. As was true with the old system, the directory still will display the name and graduation year for all alumni, and registered individuals may choose which parts of their personal profile to display to other registered users.
Among the effects of changes being made behind the scenes are two that relate to increased security. The process of registering to use HoosOnline, for example, is being streamlined. Also, previously registered users will be prompted to update their passwords. The 50,000 people registered for HoosOnline will receive individual instructions by email or letter to alert them to these changes and to give specific instructions about their HoosOnline account.
